Microsporia
Synonyms: "shingles, ringworm, dermatophytosis"
Microsporia is a fungal skin disease caused by the fungi Microsporum canis and Microsporum gypseum. Animals and humans are affected.
Animals become infected by contact with sick animals and by crowding. Young animals and immunocompromised pets are most susceptible. When infected with microsporia, skin areas on the head and limbs are affected; without treatment, the whole body may be affected. Often a bacterial infection is attached.
Symptoms of microsporia
rounded hairless areas,
itching,
redness and scabbing of the skin,
rapid spread of the affected areas over the body.
Diagnosis of microsporia
Microsporia is diagnosed by using a Wood's lamp (fluorescent lamp) and scraping the affected areas of the body.
Treatment of microsporia
Systemic antifungal drugs based on ketoconazole, itracanazole are prescribed. Local treatment of the affected skin areas with fungicidal preparations is carried out by first trimming the hair around the infected area. Iodine-containing preparations may be used for local treatment.
Previously, special vaccines and immunostimulants were used to treat microsporia.
