Dipylidiosis

13
Synonyms: "cucumber chain", "cucumber man"

Dipilidiosis ("cucumber chain", "cucumber man") is a worm infestation (infection/disease) caused by the cestode (tapeworm) Dipilidium caninum. Dipilidiosis affects carnivorous animals and, rarely, humans.

Development cycle of the cucumber chainworm

The reproduction process of this helminth is very interesting. The main host is dogs, cats, foxes, foxes and others, and the intermediate host is fleas. Eggs of worms in the external environment are eaten by fleas, which live in bedding, in dumps, in places where animals congregate. The main hosts of the "cucumber chain" are infected by swallowing a flea with helminth eggs.
This disease is ubiquitous and widespread.

Symptoms of dipylidiosis

The parasite affects the intestinal wall and the mucous membrane, causing a violation of the normal work of the digestive canal. Over time, atrophy of the jejunum occurs.

Large numbers of tapeworms cause problems with the passage of food. Intoxication (poisoning of the body) occurs, digestive function is disturbed, vomiting occurs, animals become thin and nervousness is not uncommon. Young animals suffer severely from the disease and die without proper treatment.

Diagnosis is made on the basis of clinical examination of the animal, faecal analysis.

Treatment of dipylidiosis ("cucumber chain")

Treatment is aimed at destroying the causative agent of the disease. Standard antihelminthic drugs based on praziquantel, febantel are used.

Prevention is treatment of the animal with insectoacaricidal preparations against insect parasites, including fleas, which are the main source of infection.

Symptoms of dipylidiosis
The parasite affects the intestinal wall and the mucous membrane, causing a disruption in the normal functioning of the alimentary canal. Over time, atrophy of the jejunum occurs. A large number of tapeworms leads to problems with the passage of food. Intoxication (poisoning of the body) occurs, digestive function is upset, vomiting occurs, animals lose weight, and nervousness is not uncommon. Young animals suffer severely from the disease and die without proper treatment.

Diagnosis is made on the basis of clinical examination of the animal, faecal analysis.
