Bunostomosis

14

Bunostomiasis is a parasitic disease of ruminants. The disease is widespread. It progresses especially quickly when cattle are kept in damp, dirty pens.

What is bunostomosis, the causes of the disease

Pathology is caused by two types of helminths:

Bunostomum trigonocephalum;

Bunostomum phlebotomum.

These nematodes from the Ancylostomatidae family are parasitic in the small intestine. Adults reach a size of 2.5 cm.

Infection occurs in two ways:

alimentary — when ingesting larvae with dirty grass;

percutaneously - through damaged skin while the animal is resting lying on the ground in the pasture.

In the first case, bunostomes reach the small intestine, where they develop into mature individuals. With percutaneous penetration, they enter the blood vessels, are transferred by blood to the right lobe of the heart, then enter the lungs and bronchi with blood flow. Then the animal coughs them up into its mouth and swallows them. The larvae enter the small intestine. Bunostomes live in the body of the "host" for more than a year.

The parasites belong to hematophages. One individual consumes up to 0.05 mg of blood per day. During migration, helminths damage the lung tissue, leaving numerous hemorrhages on its surface. In the digestive tract, they provoke inflammatory processes. Secretory function and intestinal motility are impaired.

Symptoms and diagnostic methods

The main signs of bunostomosis are:

dermatitis;

decreased appetite;

cough;

continuous diarrhea;

sneezing;

atony, lack of mobility;

increased thirst;

constipation;

oedema;

anemia;

loss of gloss, loss of wool (in sheep).

Calves may develop catarrhal-purulent pneumonia. Young animals suffer the disease more severely, lag behind in development, and die from exhaustion.

Attention: deaths of up to 80% of the number of sick lambs are known.

Lifetime diagnosis of bunostomosis is difficult due to the low specificity of the symptoms of the disease. Basically, the disease is detected by growing larvae in faeces.

An accurate diagnosis is made posthumously. During autopsy of animals, a large number of bunostomes are found in the intestines. In places where they accumulate, ulcerations of the organ mucosa and hemorrhages are observed. The inflammation spreads to the muscle layer and becomes purulent.

Treatment of the disease

Treatment and prevention of bunostomosis is carried out through the use of special anthelmintic drugs.

Effective tools are produced by Apicenna:

Neomectin solution for injection has a wide spectrum of effect against nematodes of the gastrointestinal tract, lungs, as well as other external and internal parasites. A single injection is sufficient to achieve the result. The drug is rapidly absorbed and does not provoke a negative reaction at the injection site;

Praziver is a suspension for oral use. It protects farm animals from most helminths and insects;

Eprimec is a solution for injection. Eprimec can be used at any stage of pregnancy in animals, and the drug is not excreted in milk.

Attention: all drugs can be administered to livestock as prescribed by a veterinarian, strictly observing the dosage, frequency, and method of application indicated in the instructions.

Constantly maintaining cleanliness in the premises where the herd is kept helps to avoid infection of the livestock. Timely treatment of dermatological diseases associated with skin penetration.

Bunostomosis is a dangerous helminthic disease that can lead to mass death of farm animals. To avoid negative consequences, it is necessary to carefully monitor the condition of cows, sheep, and goats. Immediately isolate the diseased individuals. Follow the schedule of preventive deworming recommended by your veterinarian.
